NORSE GLEIPNIR (2011)

(Unpublished) Serious Games Quest Mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

DESCRIPTION

In Norse Gleipnir the player take on the role of the amnesic hero that started his adventures in Norse. He has left the village of Bracka to have an adventure in "Svartalfaheim", the realm of the dwarves, but finds himself trapped in their underground world.

To escape he has to help the asa god Skirnir and the dwarves to gather the ingredients for the forging of a fetter to the great Fenrir, the wolf that will devour the world one day.

Norse Gleipnir is a Serious Games module created for my second thesis project at university. I mainly focused my attention to create narrative and spatial exploration challanges in this project. The goal of my study was to get an insight as to whether

  1. It could be more motivating for the player to read about a subject matter (in this case Norse mythology) if it was integrated as part of the games dialogue and quests to a relatively high level, or through separate texts appearing in the game telling more about the myth that the events of the game is based upon.
  2. A level of extensive spatial exploration could be an interesting way of acquiring that information.

I created the level design (lighting, layout, events etc.), quest design, writing and integration of facts, research about Norse mythology, some scripting in Oblivion's own scripting language, and conducted play testing.

The module was built using The Elder Scrolls Construction Set and the original assets of the game was used, as well as the following material created by modders:

  • "Dwarf race v.2.0.1 by Peanutkiller at Nexusmods" was used for the models of the dwarves.
  • "TESIV Gecko Plugin Utility by Team Gecko at Nexusmods" was used to create lipsync and silent voice files to make the dialogue stay on screen long enough to read it.
